I recently reconnected with a friend from early childhood. More than 60 years had passed since we played together as toddling next-door neighbors. (Our mothers were BFFs decades before that acronym existed.) My friend and I caught up mostly via emails. We both have strong backgrounds in journalism and writing, so emails were an easy way for us to share our stories.

At some point in the catching-up process, it seemed appropriate to relate my religious history. “As you know, I was raised Catholic. I attended Catholic schools for 10 years. By the time I was a teenager, I had no use for Catholicism.
